Cutting Down Dust and Pollen in Brampton Homes

If you dust on Sunday and the furniture looks the same by Wednesday, your HVAC system is part of the story. Every bit of air in the house goes through it several times a day, so it can either clean the air or spread dust around.

Understand the filter rating

Furnace filters are rated by MERV. A cheap fibreglass filter (MERV 1 to 4) stops large debris and protects the blower, but lets most fine dust and pollen through. MERV 8 catches more household dust. MERV 11 to 13 gets a large share of pollen, pet dander and fine particles.

The catch: a thicker, finer 1-inch filter can choke airflow on some furnaces. That’s why we often recommend a 4- or 5-inch media filter cabinet. The extra depth means more surface area, so you get better filtration with less resistance, and the filter lasts six months or longer.

Leaky return ducts pull in dirty air

Return ducts run under negative pressure. If they’re leaky, especially in an unfinished basement, garage or attic, they suck in dust and insulation fibres and blow them into the house, bypassing the filter entirely. Sealing return joints and the filter slot cover is a cheap fix that’s often overlooked.

Fan settings

The filter only works when air is moving. In allergy season, running the furnace fan on a low continuous or circulate setting keeps air passing through the filter. On an ECM (variable-speed) blower, the energy cost is modest.

What about duct cleaning?

It can help after renovations, a rodent problem, or if you can see build-up in the ducts. It doesn’t replace good filtration, and it won’t fix dust if the returns are leaking. Be cautious of very cheap duct cleaning offers that turn into upsells.

UV and HEPA

For severe allergies, a HEPA bypass unit adds another level of filtration. UV lights target mould and bacteria growing on the AC coil, not dust. Our post on HEPA, UV lights and humidifiers explains the difference.
