Better Indoor Air in Thornhill: HEPA, UV Lights and Humidifiers Explained
“Air quality” gets thrown around a lot, and the products sold under that name do very different things. Here’s a plain explanation of the three we install most in Thornhill homes, and who each one is for.

Filtration: for dust, pollen and pet hair
If allergies are the main complaint, start with the filter. A standard 1-inch filter mostly protects the furnace. A 4- or 5-inch media filter in the MERV 11 to 13 range catches far more fine dust and pollen without choking airflow. True HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, but most furnaces can’t push air through them directly, so HEPA is usually installed as a separate bypass unit.
UV lights: for the coil and the ductwork
A UV germicidal lamp mounted near the AC coil keeps mold and bacteria from growing on the wet coil surface. It’s most useful in homes with musty smells when the AC starts, or where coils get dirty quickly. UV doesn’t replace filtration; it works on what grows inside the system, not dust floating in the room. Bulbs need replacing about once a year.
Humidifiers: for dry winter air
In a GTA winter, indoor humidity can drop well under 20%. That’s when you get static shocks, dry skin, and gaps opening in hardwood floors. A whole-home humidifier on the furnace adds moisture as the air circulates. Aim for roughly 30 to 40% in cold weather; much higher and you’ll see condensation on windows. Health Canada has guidance on humidity and mould if you want to read more.
Which one do you need?
- Sneezing and dust on everything: better filtration first.
- Musty smell from the vents in summer: UV light and a coil cleaning.
- Dry air, static and cracked lips in winter: a humidifier.
Many homes end up with two of the three, but there’s no need to buy all of them at once. See our indoor air quality services, or reach out at 647-657-2977 and tell us what you’re noticing at home. We serve Thornhill and the rest of the GTA.
