Gas Line Work in Ajax: BBQs, Stoves, Dryers and Heaters
Adding a gas appliance is one of the most common small jobs we do in Ajax: a BBQ line on the deck, a gas range in a kitchen reno, a dryer, or a heater for the garage. It looks simple, a pipe from A to B, but there’s more to it than that.

It has to be done by a licensed gas fitter
In Ontario, gas piping and appliance hookups have to be done by a TSSA-registered contractor with a licensed gas technician. That isn’t red tape for its own sake. A small leak at a fitting behind a wall can go unnoticed for a long time.
Pipe sizing is the part people don’t think about
Every appliance on a gas line needs a certain volume of gas. The pipe size depends on the total load of everything connected, and on the length of the run. Tee a BBQ into a line that’s already feeding the furnace and water heater, and you can starve the furnace on a cold day when everything is running. We add up the BTU load before deciding where to tie in and what size pipe to run.
What a proper install includes
- A shut-off valve at every appliance, so it can be isolated without turning off the whole house.
- A sediment trap (drip leg) where the appliance needs one.
- Proper support and protection for the pipe, especially outdoors and through walls.
- A pressure test and leak check before the line goes into service.
- The right connector for the appliance. Flexible connectors are made for specific uses and lengths.
Outdoor BBQ lines
For a deck or patio, we usually run the line with a quick-connect outlet so the BBQ can be moved or stored. The outlet needs to be clear of windows, dryer vents and air intakes.
Smell gas?
Leave the house first and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside. Don’t flip switches or use a phone inside. Once the utility has made it safe, a gas fitter can find and repair the leak.
