How to fix pvc versus abs connections at the furnace: step by step

  1. Use PVC primer and PVC solvent cement when running PVC vent pipe.
  2. When using ABS vent, bond to the unit's PVC fitting with transition solvent cement.
  3. Use all-purpose cement only when fittings and pipe are the same material.
  4. Use low-temperature solvent cement in cold weather.
  5. Do not use hammer blows to insert pipe.
Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
