Is a Smart Thermostat Worth It? An Honest Look
Smart thermostats get sold as a money-saver for every home. In our experience in Aurora, they’re a good upgrade for a lot of people, a so-so one for some, and occasionally the wrong choice. Here’s how to tell which group you’re in.

Where the savings come from
A smart thermostat doesn’t make your furnace or AC more efficient. It saves energy by running it less: lowering the temperature when nobody’s home or everyone’s asleep. If you already use a programmable thermostat with a sensible schedule, the extra savings are small. If your thermostat sits at 23°C all day, every day, the savings can be real.
Where they’re worth it even without big savings
- Irregular schedules: shift work, travel, a cottage. Geofencing and remote control handle what a fixed schedule can’t.
- Uneven floors: models with remote room sensors can average temperatures or favour the bedroom at night.
- Alerts: a notification that the house is dropping in temperature while you’re away in winter can save you from frozen pipes.
- Maintenance reminders and runtime reports that show if something changed.
Compatibility questions to ask first
Most smart thermostats need a C (common) wire for steady power. Older homes often have only two or four wires at the thermostat. There are adapters, but adding a proper C wire is usually more reliable. Two-stage furnaces, heat pumps with backup heat, humidifiers and dehumidifiers all need the thermostat set up correctly. A heat pump with the wrong settings can use far more electric backup heat than it should, which wipes out any savings.
When we’d skip it
Some high-end variable-speed systems come with their own communicating thermostat. Replacing it with a third-party smart thermostat can disable features like full modulation. In that case, the manufacturer’s own Wi-Fi control is the better choice.
