Heat Pumps in Brampton Homes: How They Handle a Canadian Winter

Heat pumps have come a long way. Many Brampton homeowners are now asking whether one could replace or work alongside their furnace. The short answer: yes, if it’s the right type and set up properly.

How a heat pump heats

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In winter it pulls heat from the outdoor air, even cold air, and moves it inside. Because it moves heat instead of making it, it can deliver more heat energy than the electricity it uses.

What happens when it gets really cold

Capacity drops as the outdoor temperature falls. Standard heat pumps lose a lot of output below about -10°C. Cold-climate heat pumps use variable-speed compressors and are rated to keep heating at -25°C or lower, although with reduced capacity. That’s why the system design matters more than the brand.

Defrost mode is normal

In winter, frost forms on the outdoor coil. Every so often the heat pump switches to defrost for a few minutes: the fan stops, you may see steam, and you might hear a whoosh. That’s normal. A unit encased in solid ice isn’t, and needs a service call.

Backup heat: furnace or electric

Most heat pumps in the GTA are paired with backup heat. A hybrid (dual-fuel) system keeps your gas furnace and switches to it below a set outdoor temperature. An all-electric system uses electric heat strips. The thermostat setup decides when backup kicks in, and getting it wrong can make heating bills higher, not lower.

Is it a good fit for your home?

  • If you’re replacing your AC anyway, a heat pump costs a bit more and gives you efficient heating for spring and fall.
  • Homes with good insulation and decent ductwork get the best results.
  • Ductless mini-splits work well for additions, basements and homes without ducts.
