Applies to: Fireplaces with Maxitrol GV60 remote valve systems

Common causes of maxitrol gv60 remote valve: fireplace will not light or respond

  • Low or corroded receiver batteries (most common)
  • Remote not communicating
  • Motor or electrical fault
  • Weak thermocouple circuit or valve magnet
  • Vent problem (direct vent)
  • Wrong inlet or manifold pressure

How to fix maxitrol gv60 remote valve: fireplace will not light or respond: step by step

  1. Communication: the remote should show MAN (manual) and a battery icon; pressing flame up/down should turn the valve knob. One beep with no knob movement = electrical problem; one long beep = motor failure; rapid beeps for 3 s = low battery.
  2. Batteries: receiver battery voltage not less than 5.8 VDC. Corrosion in the battery box is the #1 service issue.
  3. Manual light: knob to MAN, press the small tool into the large hole, light the pilot and hold 10 s, then turn back to ON - proves the thermocouple circuit and gas supply.
  4. Thermocouple: red terminal to ground should read 10-15 mV.
  5. Startup: yellow terminal to ground should read 5+ mV when the solenoid clunks in (battery holding the magnet). Red to yellow loss no more than 2-3 mV.
  6. Dropout: shut off gas or blow out the pilot - the red terminal should drop out at about 2 mV; or time it: magnet reset in under 10 s = bad, over 20 s = good.
  7. Direct vent window test: burns right with the glass off but not with it on = vent problem (restrictors are part of the vent).
  8. Gas pressure at full flow: inlet 5-7 in. w.c. NG / 11-14 in. LP; manifold 3.5-4 in. NG / 9.5-10 in. LP (use the rating plate value). Close test ports and leak check.
Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
