How to fix annual planned service inspection: step by step

  1. Check that fresh air grilles and louvers on the unit and in the room are open and unobstructed.
  2. Inspect the burners for rust, dirt or signs of water.
  3. Inspect the vent pipe for water, cracks, damage, sagging or disconnected joints.
  4. Inspect the unit appearance for rust, dirt, water, and burnt or damaged wires or components.
  5. Confirm the blower access door is in place and seals the return air from the room.
  6. Confirm the return air duct is attached and sealed to the unit.
  7. Observe unit operation to check performance of the unit and the vent system.
  8. Analyze flue gases and compare them to the unit specifications.
  9. Shut the furnace down temporarily if problems found cannot be fixed right away.
  10. Tell the homeowner to keep items away from the furnace so the combustion air supply is not blocked.
Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
