Tubing & brazing: Heat Pump tips

Updated · by Aurora Star Tech Inc.

Short, practical technician tips on tubing & brazing for heat pump. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.

Insulate the accumulator and suction line (Caution)

Generic

Condensation on an uninsulated accumulator rusts seams, braze joints and bends; inspect those spots and replace a rusted accumulator.

R-22 → R-410A is not a drop-in

Generic

Needs smaller metering device (10–15%), thicker-wall compressor & tubing, 600 psi drier, 235 psi evaporator, R-410A-rated condenser, POE oil with 2–3 oil changes to flush mineral oil, 800 psi gauges/hoses, 400 psi recovery cylinders. Contact OEM before any retrofit; usually metering device and oil change plus flush.

Replacing a reversing valve

Generic

Filing old braze risks filings in the circuit; many techs cut in all new stubs. Wrap body in wet rag / heat paste; a tuning-fork tip heats three stubs evenly.

Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.

General guidance for qualified technicians. The manufacturer's installation and service manual and local codes always take priority.
