Other: Heat Pump tips
Short, practical technician tips on other for heat pump. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.
Accumulator can still be overwhelmed (Caution)
Generic
An accumulator protects against normal floodback, not massive low-side flooding — a badly overcharged or hunting system can still slug.
Biflow metering TXV bulb goes between reversing valve and compressor
Generic
With equalizer on the same line so it reads superheat in both modes.
Defrost "smoke" is steam
Generic
Warn new owners that the outdoor unit steaming in cold weather is normal defrost.
Dirty sock syndrome fix
Generic
Mold on indoor coil (HP heat not hot enough to kill it); UV germicidal light plus periodic pan/plenum chemical cleaning; shield plastic drain pans from UV.
Drain line flush
Generic
Blow out with air, prime trap, flush with 1:4 bleach:water.
Heat pump accumulators have smaller orifices
Generic
Don't substitute an AC accumulator; it won't throttle liquid return in winter.
Heat pump check valves bypass the idle metering device
Generic
Each TXV/piston works in one mode; the check valve routes flow around it in the other.
Ice around outdoor unit → check base-pan drain heat tape
Generic
Frozen drain means the pan heater is dead or missing.
Install outdoor unit on risers above snow line
Generic
8–18" typical; tell owner to keep snow clear.
Piston orifice size changes with line-set length
Generic
Manufacturers ship alternate pistons; long suction line sets may need a different orifice size. Heat pumps use two pistons (one meters each direction, the other free-flows through its flutes) or one piston outdoors + TXV with check-valve bypass indoors.
Record the LED code before anything else
Generic
Status LEDs flash codes keyed to the maker's table (example heat pump board: 1 = heartbeat, 2 = HPS open ≥6 s, 3 = discharge >263°F, 4 = discharge <90°F after 1 h run, 5 = defrost fail, 6 = discharge sensor short, 7 = outdoor sensor open/short, 9 = bonnet sensor fail).
Reversing valve energize state
Generic
In the book's example the solenoid is de-energized in cooling and energized in heating; the pilot uses discharge pressure to shift the piston. (Manufacturers vary — check the unit.)
Reversing valve identification
Generic
Lone stub = discharge; middle of three = suction. De-energized usually = heating.
Run every mode on a HP PM
Generic
Cooling, heating and defrost; a reversing valve that won't shift gets replaced.
Scroll/rotary vs recip for residential
Generic
Small hermetic recips and scrolls are chosen for homes because they're quiet, compact and need no service for years; scrolls have fewer parts, less vibration and can modulate via bypass port, variable speed or scroll-separation.
