Combustion & gas: Refrigeration tips
Short, practical technician tips on combustion & gas for refrigeration. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.
Excess flash gas in the liquid line hurts TXVs
Generic
A liquid-to-suction heat exchanger subcools liquid and warms suction to prevent it.
Hot-gas bypass needs an accumulator
Generic
If bypass gas cools and partly condenses, liquid reaches the compressor; an accumulator on the suction line protects it.
Hot-gas defrost solenoid stuck
Generic
Rap the valve body sharply with timer closed; hear the hot-gas surge / line warms = it freed. Warm evap + warm line with timer open = stuck open; rap again, low-side pressure should start dropping. Else replace.
Hot-gas defrost valve calibration
Generic
Low-pressure-adjusting hot-gas valves have an adjustable bellows — check the manufacturer's pressure table before calibrating.
Hot-gas defrost vs hot-gas bypass (Pro Tip)
Generic
Defrost valve dumps a lot of hot gas to clear a coil; bypass valve feeds a small, regulated amount to the low side for capacity control / low-load protection. Different jobs, often different valves.
Keep hot-gas defrost drain lines from freezing
Generic
Route part of the hot-gas line under the drain pan/pipe or add a small heater, or the melt water refreezes in the drain.
Liquid injection / desuperheater valve
Generic
When bypassed hot gas is too hot, a TXV-style valve sensing suction superheat injects liquid to desuperheat it. Same body as a TXV, different job.
ORI / ORD head pressure valves
Generic
ORI (condenser pressure regulator) at condenser outlet closes as condenser pressure drops → condenser floods → pressure rises. ORD (receiver pressure regulator) opens on ~20 psi differential between discharge and receiver to feed hot gas into the receiver. LAC = both in one body with an ambient-sensing dome. Aliases: holdback, limiter, discharge vapor bypass, condenser bypass.
SLHX protects compressor and prevents sweat-back
Generic
Suction-liquid heat exchanger superheats suction (no frost back, no liquid to compressor) and subcools liquid (no flash gas in the liquid line).
