Button combinations: Furnace tips
Short, practical technician tips on button combinations for furnace. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.
Push button navigation on the control board
Goodman · All 34.5in chassis furnaces
Three buttons are labeled Left, Center and Right. Left and Right browse menus and options. Center enters a menu and selects an option. Pressing any two buttons together returns to the Status Menu. Menus time out after 30 seconds with no button press, and an option that was not selected is not saved.
- Press Center in the Status Menu to enter the option menu.
- Press Left or Right to scroll to the next option.
- Press Center once to stop the option flashing, then again to select it.
- Press any two buttons together to return to the Status Menu.
Recall or clear the last 10 error codes (red LED button)
Lennox · EL195UHNE furnaces with ignition control 103217-03 or 107163-01 (red LED)
A button next to the red LED replays the stored error codes, newest first; holding it clears them.
- Press and release the button to start recall (newest code first).
- Watch the red LED flash each code, with a 3 second pause between codes.
- To clear the stored codes, press and hold the button for more than 5 seconds.
Pushbutton (S8) status menu and fault history
Rheem · 96V and 96MDV communicating furnaces
A short press enters the status menu. Longer presses exit it. The fault history can be cleared from the FL menu.
- Press the pushbutton for less than 2 seconds to enter the status menu and step through categories
- Press for more than 2 but less than 5 seconds to exit the status menu on release
- Leave the button alone for 60 seconds to exit the status menu automatically
- While the FL (fault history) menu is active, hold the button 5 seconds or more to clear the buffer
- Clear confirmation: A and D segments of the right display flash on and off three times
Pushbutton status menu: fault history, CFM, fire rate, unit size, temperature rise
Rheem · (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces
One button (S8) on the control cycles through live data on the two seven-segment displays.
- Press the button for less than 2 seconds: FL shows followed by up to six stored faults.
- Each further short press moves on: AF (target CFM), Fr (0 / Lo / HI), UI (input in kBTU), tr (temperature rise, only with the supply sensor).
- Hold 2-5 seconds and release to leave the menu; it also closes after 60 seconds of no presses.
Test communication with the LEARN button (RGPE/RGLE)
Rheem · Rheem/Ruud RGPE / RGLE modulating furnaces
Holding LEARN makes the green RX LED blink rapidly if the control is trying to communicate. No blinking means communication cannot be established (check wires 1 and 2 at connector J9 are not reversed).
- Press and hold the LEARN button for two seconds
- Watch the green RX LED: a short burst of rapid blinking = attempting communication
- No blinking: check the 1, 2, R and C wiring between furnace, thermostat and condenser
Turn on extended display mode at power-up
Rheem · 96V and 96MDV communicating furnaces
Pressing the pushbutton during the power-up sequence turns on extended display mode, which changes how the seven-segment display behaves.
- Hold or press the pushbutton while the furnace is powering up.
- Refer to the extended display mode table in the full manual for the display changes (the table is not legible on the extracted pages).
