Airflow & ducts: Refrigeration tips

Updated · by Aurora Star Tech Inc.

Short, practical technician tips on airflow & ducts for refrigeration. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.

Air curtains and drafts

Generic

Open cases must be shielded from HVAC grilles, unit heaters and fans — drafts break the curtain, raise run cost and cause defrost problems; check the total electrical load when cases are ganged.

Medium-temp coils ice at the bottom

Generic

Melt water from the top re-freezes on the lower fins and blocks airflow — look low on the coil when a medium-temp box has airflow problems.

Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.

General guidance for qualified technicians. The manufacturer's installation and service manual and local codes always take priority.
