NTI Boiler: Pre-start water chemistry and freeze protection

Updated · by Aurora Star Tech Inc.

Pre-start water chemistry and freeze protection on a NTI boiler: Poor water quality or lime scale shortens heat exchanger life. Operating above 135°F speeds up scale build-up. Clean and flush the system before installing the boiler.

How to fix pre-start water chemistry and freeze protection: step by step

  1. Flush the system without the boiler connected to remove sediment.
  2. Check the return Y strainer and clean it if needed.
  3. Test water chemistry on both the CH and DHW sides before start-up.
  4. Use only propylene glycol for IWH loops, GRAS rated. Do not exceed 50% glycol unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.
  5. Never use automotive or ethylene glycol antifreeze.
  6. Do not use petroleum-based cleaning or sealing compounds.
Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
