Napoleon Gas Fireplace: Complete unit shutdown – direct vent
Complete unit shutdown - direct vent on a Napoleon gas fireplace: Burner (and often pilot) shut down; flame goes blue and see-through before going out - a venting/recirculation fault.
Applies to: Napoleon direct-vent gas fireplaces (general service manual flowchart; applies to GD70NT-S/GD70PT-S)
Common causes of complete unit shutdown - direct vent
- Leaking seals at vent, door, relief doors, burner or pilot
- Missing 2nd storm collar on vertical terminal
- Blocked termination
- Unsealed inner/outer vent joints
- Vent length/rise outside spec
How to fix complete unit shutdown - direct vent: step by step
- If the flame does not go blue first, use the Pilot Failure guide instead.
- Check seals on vent, main door, relief doors and around the burner and pilot assembly; reseal or replace (use the paper gasket test).
- Vertical termination: add the 2nd storm collar per the manual diagrams.
- Clear any blockage or obstruction at the terminal.
- Seal all inner and outer vent pipe joints.
- Confirm vent length and rise are within the fireplace and code limits; correct as needed.
