Applies to: Napoleon gas fireplaces (spill switch applies to natural-vent units)

Common causes of test: spill switch and wall switch/thermostat wiring

  • Failed spill switch
  • Failed wall switch/thermostat
  • Damaged wiring

How to fix test: spill switch and wall switch/thermostat wiring: step by step

  1. Spill switch: disconnect all wires, meter on ohms across the two spade terminals; the manual says replace the switch if it reads 1 ohm or higher.
  2. Wall switch/thermostat: with switch leads on valve terminals 1 & 3 (top and bottom), disconnect the leads at the switch end and join them together.
  3. Turn the valve on - if the burner lights, the wiring is good and the switch is faulty.
  4. WARNING: a spill switch / vent safety switch may be bypassed only temporarily for testing - it is illegal to leave it bypassed. Restore before leaving.
Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
