What a Proper Furnace Installation Includes
Two furnaces of the same make and model can perform very differently depending on how they were installed. If you’re replacing a furnace in Whitby, here’s what a proper job should include.
Before the install: sizing
A heat-loss calculation based on the house, not the nameplate of the old furnace. Most homes we see have had insulation, window or door upgrades since the original furnace went in, so the right size is often smaller.
Venting
High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC or similar pipe, sized and run according to the manufacturer’s maximum length and number of elbows. The termination outside has to be the right distance from windows, doors, the gas meter and the ground, and above the expected snow line.
Condensate
A condensing furnace produces water every time it runs. It needs a proper trap, a drain to a floor drain or a condensate pump, and ideally a neutralizer to protect drains. A badly routed drain is one of the most common causes of winter service calls on new furnaces.
Gas line
A shut-off valve and sediment trap at the furnace, the right pipe size for the load, and a leak test.
Ductwork and airflow
A new furnace bolted onto undersized return ducts will be noisy and run hot. We check static pressure and fix the transition pieces so air moves freely. This is also the time to add a better filter cabinet.
Start-up and commissioning
Gas pressure set to spec, temperature rise checked, combustion tested, blower speeds set for heating and cooling, safeties tested, and the thermostat configured for the furnace’s stages. The homeowner gets shown the filter, the shut-off, and what the status light means.
Paperwork
Permits where required, warranty registration, and a record of the start-up readings. Keep it with the house documents.
