Refrigerant handling: Refrigeration tips (part 5 of 5)
Short, practical technician tips on refrigerant handling for refrigeration. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.
Warm the whole system evenly during evacuation (heat lamps / room heat, never torch)
Generic
Pressure drop freezes moisture; even warming prevents re-condensing in cold spots.
Wax vs ice in cap tube
Generic
Ice clears with a new drier; wax needs cap tube AND drier replaced plus fresh low-wax oil. Check by warming cap-tube/evap joint with rag and warm water (no flame): hissing as it melts = ice. No hiss after running = clogged.
Wax-free synthetics have no floc point
Generic
Mineral oil wax can plug orifices at low temp; floc test = 10% refrigerant / 90% oil cooled until cloudy.
Wet insulation signs
Generic
Unit runs more than normal and cabinet exterior feels cold → air leak in outer shell letting moisture into insulation; find and seal the leak, dry it out. Freezers can buckle from ice in insulation.
