Refrigerant handling: Electrical tips
Short, practical technician tips on refrigerant handling for electrical. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.
"Four gauge" vs "four aught"
Generic
4 AWG ≈ 85 A feeder wire; 4/0 AWG ≈ 230 A service wire. Ask if unsure which is meant.
Bearing noise diagnosis
Generic
Dry bearing noise is brief before seizure; knock = excessive endplay (measure with dial indicator vs spec); heavy rumble at start-up = badly worn; rotor hitting stator = replace. Overheated bearing causes: oil too heavy/thin, dirty oil, belt too tight, pulley hub rubbing, misalignment. Bearings are usually not repaired in the field — swap the motor.
Capacitor safety & testing
Generic
Bleed start capacitors before touching (some have no bleed resistor); test with a capacitance meter, never the old short-after-charge trick.
Hermetic compressor "won't start" shortcuts
Generic
Hums but won't start: wiring, low voltage, start capacitor, relay contacts, high head (discharge/receiver valves closed?), tight compressor (oil level), weak capacitor. Starts but stays on start winding: low voltage, relay, shorted run cap. Runs but trips: added fan/pump on wrong side of protector, high suction, high discharge, weak protector, unbalanced 3-phase, broken discharge valve.
Lost bellows charge
Generic
Above-atmospheric element (closes on rise, refrigeration) that leaks can't push the switch → unit won't start. Below-atmospheric element (opens on rise, electric heat/defrost) that leaks lets atmosphere in → stays open. Charged bellows ≈ 75 psig or more — finger pressure won't compress it; if it squashes easily, replace.
Setback must last several hours
Generic
Or recovery energy wipes out savings; pre-cool before peak hours because of heat lag.
Start caps are short-duty
Generic
Start capacitors (dry electrolytic) are only meant to be in the circuit a fraction of a second; a stuck centrifugal switch or relay keeping them in will damage windings. Run caps are oil-filled for continuous duty. Never interchange them.
Verify a control by its cut-in/cut-out
Generic
Watch when a device starts and stops against the gauge/thermometer to confirm it's operating as set.
Wipe excess oil off fan motors
Generic
Oil residue on blades collects lint and kills airflow; confirm blades tight on shaft and seated in shroud; replace bent blades (vibration eats bearings).
