Electrical: Air Conditioner tips

Updated · by Aurora Star Tech Inc.

Short, practical technician tips on electrical for air conditioner. Check each one against the manual for your exact model before acting.

Condenser fan wiring

Generic

Condenser fan leads usually connect across C and R of the compressor so it runs in parallel with the compressor under thermostat control.

Contactors are rebuildable

Generic

Contactors and motor starters can have coils and contacts replaced; coils come in 24/120/240 V. Three-phase contactor connects L1–T1, L2–T2, L3–T3. Starters add overload heaters.

Discharge line thermostat logic

Generic

Because head pressure and discharge temperature rise together (Gay-Lussac), a discharge line thermostat opening on high temperature is an alternative/backup to a high-pressure switch.

Fans may share a motor

Generic

Room AC evaporator and condenser fans can be on one shaft or separate motors; check the literature before diagnosing a "dead" fan.

Thermostat quick test on room AC

Generic

Cover inlet and outlet with a cloth so air recirculates and drops fast to cut-out; watch with a thermometer.

Thermostatic mixing valve on tower return

Generic

Holds condenser head pressure constant in cold weather.

Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.

General guidance for qualified technicians. The manufacturer's installation and service manual and local codes always take priority.
