NTI Boiler: Thermostat circuit check (no voltage allowed)
Thermostat circuit check (no voltage allowed) on a NTI boiler: This check confirms the thermostat, zone valve and relay wiring is sending no voltage to the boiler's low voltage thermostat terminals TT1/TT2. Those terminals expect a dry contact closure only. Foreign voltage on them can damage the control board, and it often hides in the field wiring where a zone valve end switch or relay shares a common with the thermostat circuit. Before touching anything, make sure you know which wires are live, treat the zone wiring as possibly line voltage until a meter says otherwise, and keep the meter on a proper AC range.
Applies to: TRX150 and related TRX models
Common causes of thermostat circuit check (no voltage allowed)
- Wiring to the thermostat terminals TT1/TT2 is live, often from a 3-wire zone valve
- Zone valve end switch or relay contact wired so it passes power instead of a dry contact
- Shared common or transformer between zone controls and the thermostat circuit
- Damaged or crossed wiring in a multi-conductor thermostat cable
How to fix thermostat circuit check (no voltage allowed): step by step
- Disconnect the two external wires from terminals TT1/TT2 and keep them apart so they cannot touch anything.
- Connect a voltmeter across the two incoming wires with power on to the thermostat circuit.
- Close each thermostat, zone valve and relay one at a time and read the voltage on every call.
- There should never be a voltage reading. If there is one, correct the external wiring before going further.
- Trace the live pair back to the zone valve end switch or relay to find where the voltage is entering.
- Reconnect the wires to TT1/TT2 only once the meter reads zero on every call, then let the boiler cycle.
- If the wiring is beyond basic checks, bring in a licensed electrician or qualified boiler technician.
