How to fix operate the primary pressure relief valve (test): step by step

  1. Make sure the relief valve outlet is piped to a safe drain, away from scalding hazards.
  2. Shut off power to the boiler and wait for it to cool.
  3. Lift the relief valve lever. If water flows freely, release the lever and let the valve seat.
  4. Watch the discharge pipe to confirm the valve does not weep after draining. If it weeps, lift the lever again to clean the seat. If it still weeps, call a qualified service technician.
  5. If no water flows when the lever is fully lifted, the valve or discharge line may be blocked. Shut the boiler down and call a qualified service technician.
  6. If the valve seats properly, restore power and observe the boiler for five minutes.
Safety: Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician. Turn off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and always follow the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
